Tri-Straits, Lawson Reef Sailboat Race

Saturday, March 5 found only 3 of us on Syndicat… our Catalina 27 sailboat.  The first race in this AYC

Bloody .5 oz spinnaker

Bloody spinnaker

series started at 0930 with only 7 boats on the line.  Evidently everyone else believed the weatherman’s 20-30 kt forecast; in reality we would have been happy if the wind had even crept above 8 kts.  Icon, with her 100′ mast found wind aloft and finished before 1300.  Syndicat, with her brand new North 3DL genoa, was the second to the first mark, promptly hoisted the .5 oz spinnaker and was also first to the second mark, and to finish.  The wind absolutely shut off around 1400 and we utilized the current to cross the finish line. It took us 1:10 to make the final mile to the finish line. The prior week, crewmember Jean Sliger cut her finger badly, yet proceeded to pack the spinnaker.  When the kite was hoisted this week we noted that she didn’t miss even one panel with her bloody finger.  Nice pack, Jean!
